LACSOP Kicks off Community Water Committee Meetings to Boost WASH Services in Lagos State

The Lagos State Civil Society Partnership (LACSOP) held the inaugural meeting of the Community Water Committees in the Saka Tinubu/IRU VI community on Monday, November 11, 2024. The meeting was part of the #ClaimForWASH Service Delivery Project, which aims to promote Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Lagos State. 

 Mrs. Bunmi Tejumola the community engagement coordinator highlighted the goals and objectives;  for community members to be able to identify some of the main issues with water and WASH services in their communities, to understand how to use simple tools to identify the root cause of the problems, to be able to prioritize the identified issues in order of the most urgent and to understand how community water committee (CWC) can work with community members in drawing up action plans to address the problems.

Mr. Kehinde Koforiji the project coordinator in his overview of the project shared the objective of the Citizens-led Accountability and Inclusion Mechanism (CLAIM) for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Service Delivery as –

a. To establish true-to-life WASH measurements that inform intervention and progression on the project – (baselines, mid-term, and project end) in connection with fiscal investments, willingness to pay, and policy effectiveness reviews.

b. To institutionalize coordination and collaboration between relevant state agencies, regulators, and WASH and between LWC and communities, that is founded on a consensus and social contract (Service Charter) by project end.

c. To facilitate partnerships with CDAs, CSOs, and CBOs to undertake campaigns and advocate on WASH to reduce demand apathy in water service provision by project end.

 d. To strengthen community management of water facilities, enhance customer responsiveness, establish sustained feedback mechanisms, and develop strategies for effective involvement of women, youth, and persons to manage water resources for climate change resilience.

 
Mr. Kehinde Kuforiji the project coordinator in his closing remark charged the newly elected exco that “ WASH issues are inclusive and as such everyone in the community should not be left behind’’, and we hope that together we can improve WASH interventions and ensure our VOICE count for change  Lagos state.

The community stakeholders present were the representatives of the women, CDA, youth, and people with disabilities amongst others. The Citizens Led Accountability Mechanism (CLAIM) project for WASH is supported by the USAID/ Nigeria Lagos Urban Water Sanitation and Hygiene (LUWASH).
