ILLEGAL DETENTION – LACSOP CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF PUBLISHER, CROSS RIVER WATCH

PRESS RELEASE
31ST, August, 2019.

Lagos State Civil Society Participation for Development, LACSOP has decried the continuous detention of Mr. Agba Jalingo, Editor in Chief and Publisher of Cross River Watch by the Intelligence Response Team over a publication on Cross River State Micro Finance Bank.

Mr Agba Jalingo was on 22nd of August arrested in Lagos and taken to Calabar over recent invitation extended to him by the police command in the state over a publication about the Cross River State Microfinance bank, a matter which both parties agreed to meet on Monday August 26th, 2019.

LACSOP condemned the detention of Agba Jalingo who has been held for over 48 hours without being charged to court.

LACSOP described the actions of the Cross River State Government as an attack on press freedom and journalists adding that it is a violation of Jalingo’s rights to personal liberty, human dignity and due process.

LACSOP therefore calls for his immediate release because failure to do so would mean disregard for the rule of law.
